What is a Blue Highway? On the old Highway maps of America, the main routes were red and the back roads blue. Now even the colors are changing. But in those brevities just before dawn and a little after dusk - times neither day nor night - the old roads return to the sky some of its color. Then, in truth, they carry a mystrious cast of blue, and it's that time when the pull of the blue highway is strongest, when the open road beckoning, a stramgeness, a place where a man can lose himself- William Least Heat Moon Picture credit; Robert V. Technical DifficultiesFirst of all, I am alive, I did not die in the tent, but I almost lost my phone and my camera to King Neptune. I was enjoying the waves on a Maryland beach and sat my hat, shirt, my camera, and phone several feet away from the aparent water line at about 7pm EST. I enjoyed the waves for no longer 45 minutes when a seemingly harmless wave swooped past me. It took me only a few moments to realize that the point where the wave reached it's crest on the beach was just past where I left my stuff. Need less to say, my camera and my phone (pictured) were lost. I was able to salvage the pictures so there is more to come...
ChincoteagueThis is were I ended up after the incident & in true tech fashion, tried to repair my broken Treo and Camera with no success. The city is on the Virginia Side of Assateague Island & is the home of the land of pretty houses and old Mopeds in what seems like a really really nice retirement city.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge TunnelIt's the reason I went on this trip. 18 miles long with one high-level bridge, two deep tunnels, four islands, and many miles of raised causeway streaching accross the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, wouldn't you make any excuse you can to cross it? Here I'm coming off of the high level bridge heading to....
First in FlightAfter leaving the Great Dismal Swamp I was able to find and stop here at the Wright Brothers Memorial, where they made the first powered flight of a human, on December 17, 1903, for 1/5 of a mile. Contray to popular belief this famous flight took place in Kill Devil Hills, NC instead of Kitty Hawk, NC. The reason for the confusion would be that, at the time, the nearest Post Office was in Kitty Hawk.
Glide Away!!The Wright Brothers also experimented with gliders from here, Kill Devil Hill, but back then everything you see here was sand, it was part of the reason they came here every year, with this place being a remote windy location, being the other. The grass was planted by the National Park Service to prevent the famous hill from being blown or washed away.
Big BritchesThis is Cape Hatteras Light Station (#4), The tallest brick lighthouse in the US. In 1870, the lighthouse stood 490 meters from the ocean. By 1919, the ocean had advanced to within 100 meters of the tower and to within 30 meters by 1935. Something had to be done or the lighthouse was going to be destroyed.
